WARNING: REALLY LONG BLOG! (it was a really long day for us)
Sunday, after church we went on an adventure! We packed our day full of so many different things. Our first adventure was to Castle Carlisle. This castle is really close to Scotland and it was fun to see the influences of both nations in the city. Carlisle Castle has been around for at least 1000 years. It was built soon after the Normans invaded England in 1066. We had fun running around this old fortress that has seen so many battles between the English and Scots.
Pictures starting left to right and around. 1) there was a hole in the floor and erin and kelli were down below. 2) really old prisoner markings inside their chambers. They were very skilled in my opinion. 3) Erin and Kelli going down a dark hallway that was used to defend the castle and were scared by dad coming down the other side. 4) me standing IN a fireplace 5) Roman coins and other things from 2000 years ago!!! 6) The way life is. Angela as king, Erin as queen and Kelli as peasant. Just kidding. 7) Standing at the gate 8) The wardens room were most of the activity occurred. 9) (Center picture) the Castle.
After the castle we made our way back in history to the Roman fort. I LOVED IT!!! Hadrian's wall runs across the neck of the island dividing England and Scotland. We were touching walls that were put together by people 2000 years ago!!! It was fun to try to imagine what life was like back then. The wall we saw only stands about 5 feet high but it used to be 20 feet. Most everything is in rubble. After the Romans left, the valuable cut stone was taken by everyone including churches and farmers to build their churches, buildings and fences.
Most of the fort we visited is covered by earth and hasn't been excavated (because of lack of funding) and probably won't ever be seen. We did have fun chasing the tons of sheep all over the land.
After Hadrian's wall we drove though the Lakes District. This area is one of the biggest tourist places in the country (outside of London). Just breathtaking landscapes. Tons of walking trails and beautiful towns. The Lake district isn't far from the Peak District. Also beautiful, filled with the same stuff. It was pretty overcast when we went through so we will have to go back to get the whole picture. We had dinner in Windemere. It was nice to be near a lake again. This lake had swans EVERYWHERE! They were huge and fearless. If you weren't careful they would take your food right out of your hand. We also found this old bridge over the water. It was pretty neat!
