Personal History: Growing Up - Early Years

Where did you grow up?

I grew up all over the place. As a daughter of a military father we moved all over the world. I was born in Utah. As my dad decided to go back to school we moved to Oregon where he attended Nursing School. We lived with my grandparents, Jess and Betty Fleming, on their couple acre lot in Boring, Oregon. I remember running around grandma's house and playing with her decorations. Especially her glass rabbits (though that memory might be from later years). We lived in their basement. I can't tell if my memories of that place are real memories or if they are just stories I've heard enough times to think they are memories.

I do remember playing ball with my cousin (Matt or Mike - I can't remember which) on grandma's stairs to the basement. The stairs were divided by a landing halfway down. I would stand at the top and toss a ball down to my cousin and he would hit the ball with his head back up to me. I remember laughing for hours.

It was there that Erin was born. When Erin was born she was sick and needed a light to keep her warm or something. If I ask mom she will remember. I remember that Erin slept in mom and dads closet and that I would have certain chores that I would check off with stickers.

Next we moved to Travis AFB in California for about 6 months. I don't really remember much about this place other than I remember having one of those PVC pipe Beauty and The Beast tents.

After California we moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. I remember a lot more about this place. We lived on a cul-de-sac. I think it was on the north side of Las Vegas (but I really can't remember). I remember when we moved in to our new house we didn't have any furniture yet and we just picnicked on the floor. I loved it! Our backyard was unfinished. Just the desert ground with clay a few inches below. My dad had a hard time putting in the sprinkler system with all that clay. At some point we got a swingset. I think that was from my uncles on the Hampel side (but once again I could be totally wrong). This was the first place I went to school. I went to two different elementary schools. One of them was Lucille Bruner Elementary School. Which is near Craig Road. The first time I rode the school bus was terrifying. The bus stop picked up and dropped off at different places. My mom had told me to only get off at the stop I got on at. I freaked out when the bus driver tried to drop me off at a different place. I cried like crazy. I eventually made it home but man was that a terrible ordeal.

Kelli was born in Las Vegas. I remember when she was born, Grandma Fleming took Erin and I to see Lion King in the movie theater.

After Vegas, we moved to San Antonio, Texas. We lived in two rented homes. The first one we didn't stay in very long. The second was rented out by a family in our ward, the Munoz family. I remember making my walk in closet my barbie house. It was so awesome!! In San Antonio, I made a lot of friends that I still know today. We left Texas when I was about 10.

That about covers the Early Years of where I grew up. Still many more moves ahead! Funny how such a simple question did not have a simple short answer.

Personal History

As a genealogists I really should have this done already, but hey - no one is perfect.

I have several lists of questions to answer about my personal history and will start from there. Some question I might not include on this "public" website because, well, this is a public place.

One I really want to talk about is my birth and family. However, those questions ask very specific questions about full names and birth dates. So that will go elsewhere.

My hope is when I'm done with this Personal History questions I will have somewhere that all the questions are in the same place.

Sorry this post is scattered. I'm not completely focused today. :)

Working at Ancestry.com

For those wondering, I work at Ancestry.com in the Public Relation/Marketing department doing genealogy. I research celebrities and try to find connections between other celebrities. Here is a link to a recent finding done by a co-worker.

The Expo Center
Oh my goodness!!! This is the best Expo Center I've been to at a Genealogy Conference. Thank you techy people for making this awesome! The Microsoft Playplace with pool tables, massages and Kinects is great. The Internet Café in the middle of the room is so nice. And the glass room for the conference bloggers is intriguing to walk past.

The poster and signs are well put together and really tie the place together. This is great!

Clark Planetarium
As part of the conference BrightSolid rented out the Clark Planetarium Thursday evening. I took my sister Erin as my date and we had a blast! They had food including nachos, Philly cheese steak sandwiches and cookies. The food was great! The movies were awesome! The prizes were awesome genealogy things and the music was spot on. It was such a fun environment. It was funny too because Erin and I stuck out like sore thumbs. We were younger than anyone there by far. We got attention from the young planetarium staff as well as the older genealogists and techy people. Super fun!

Flowers Make Me Happy

The Last Few Weeks of My Life

I spend every Friday in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City doing research for my Capstone Genealogy class. I am proud to tell you all that I'm ahead on hours for that class.
The file cabinets where the Microfilms are kept. I live here

A few weeks ago the girls went out on the town to celebrate Lizzy's Birthday. We went so Sparks Lounge. A alcohol free place of fun-ness. Seriously - It was nice to not feel like I was in Provo for a bit. And these girls are awesome!
Ashlie (my roommate) and Rachelle (my neighbor)

The girls: Me, Hanna, Shalene, Maren, Lizzy, Ashlie and Rachelle.
The cheesecake dessert we got.

Sunday I went for a drive to Utah Lake, one of my favorite places in the winter.

I am in a floral design class at BYU. Yes, that's right. It is awesome. We made bouquets this week in our lab. Here is mine. I LOVE FLOWERS!!! THEY MAKE ME HAPPY!  I was walking around campus with them yesterday and just couldn't stop smiling.

England: Week 22 - Thanksgiving Weekend

Thanksgiving Day: London

It may not look it, but it was FREEZING!!!

Near the Christmas Market

We spent more of our time the week leading up to this playing Star Wars Lego Wii so seeing this guy was AWESOME!!!

Activity 1: SeaLife (London Aquarium)

Fishies

I found NEMO!!!

Sharks :)

Activity 2: Stomp (West End)

It was INCREDIBLE!!!!!
The show started at 3 and by the time we got out it was dark.
Weeks after this show we still randomly bang on stuff around the house (and especially at the dinner table)

Activity 3: Harrods... biggest.... store... ever.

We also felt really poor and trashy in there with all of the expensive stuff.
This store has everything: jewelry, clothes, purses, dishes, meats, breads, toys, decorations,  and who knows what else!

Underground picture.

Friday, dad and I went back to London to do some more research for my internship.
I was touching documents that were older than the United States!!! It was awesome!!!

England: Week 10 - London

Can anyone guess what movie was filmed here? The answer is.... Bourne.

Us on the Underground.
We went on the London Eye. It was AWESOME!!!
Next stop was the Tower of London

A place of torture, death and imprisonment.

Top left: prisoner art; and yes I'm sitting on the toilet.
We also saw the Crown Jewels.... THEY WERE INCREDIBLE!!! They had the jewels from William and Mary (late 1600s)

When we lived here before we took this exact same picture with us standing in the exact same places. Erin even has the same leg stance!

A Proposal

I am currently swimming in my boxes and boxes of genealogy trying to organize it and protect it while I am frolicking in England. I came across this letter from my great grandfather James Bush to his dear friend Inez Whiting. James died 5 years after they were married.

Apparently proposing through mail is a bit of a family tradition. My grandfather proposed to my grandma through a letter as well.

Dear Friend Inez,

I will answer your most welcome letter I received last week. I am pleased to get a letter from you. I arrived home Sunday night alright, I am feeling fine today and I do hope you are well, don't work too hard for those people, for you are not as strong as you were before the flu. Inez you said it was very lonesome down there when all the family was away. I think that those three weeks that I was unable to get over to Springville was the longest three weeks of all my life. I was sick myself. And I was thinking of you day and night hoping that all would be well with you. Inez I am living in hopes that someday you and I may live happy together in my home. And I don't know of any other girl in all the world that I love better. Than I do you. I will have to close so that this will get in the mail. If you will be home let me know by return mail. One week is as long as I can go without seeing you dear Inez. I will close for this time hoping to hear from you soon.

With love from
Jim

Story From the Past

This is a story written by my Grandma Hampel. I remember this experience and I had no idea what was going on. It was just a toy rat.

Oldest Child

First off, chivalry isn't completely dead. I'm keeping it alive ;)

Second off, I'm home doing my genealogy project. Yes - it is a saturday night. Don't freak out. I did go out already tonight and went to a harp concert. It was great! I'm sure you are wondering why the title of this blog is as it is. Well herein lies the story. As I'm writing up my reports on the genealogical research I've done, I realize that a good amount of my ancestors were the oldest child in their family. I think it would be interesting to do a statistical analysis of my file and figure out how many were the oldest/middle/youngest child. Anyway. That is it. Back to writing papers :)

Impressions From First Week of School

I must admit I was dreading coming back to school. I even had a terrible dream of sleeping through the first day of class. However, to my surprise and gratitude I found in that first class that first morning I loved being back. I loved the thrill of learning new things. My classes went well. I ran into someone I knew after or before every class which was great.

On Tuesday, I had my freshman level class of Psychology. It has been a while since I've been in a freshman class and all the busy work that comes with it. The things the school does to keep freshman busy and outta trouble. I'm still excited about the class though.

It is also interesting how when someone is in a relationship they don't talk to anyone else. Even nice people sitting next to them. What is going on with our world?

Work is stressful because I am in charge of hiring new TAs. It is going well but I am really quite nervous about hiring the right person.

Do You Really Understand?

For the past week or so I have had some news that I should be dying to share with everyone. However, I am surprised to discover that I don't really want to tell it. I have been wondering why. Why have I wanted to keep this information private? Why don't I want to share this?
After much thought I think I have found the reason. I don't think people would understand the depth of this news that I have. First off, it is great! Something fantastic!!! And yet it is super stressful and scary. Something that most people don't understand. Maybe they do. Maybe they just don't show that they understand. I don't know. I just don't want to share something that most people just wouldn't understand. Anyway - I will continue to ponder this subject. Just had to get my thoughts out there.

My Best Friend

My Best Friend passed away yesterday. My dog Buddy was diagnosed with cancer three months ago. I knew it was coming but just last week he was doing just fine. The drugs finally stopped helping and he couldn't eat or drink anymore.
