Glad I'm Where I Am

The past few weeks I have been learning a lot about the history of women and family. I have realized the great blessing it is that I am here, now.

It sounds crude to say it, but women used to be property. In many places in the world, they still are. I have been learning specifically about the United States so I'm gonna stick with that in my blog. Women were owned by their male family members. They were thought to be dumb and stupid. Much of this idea came from the puritans thinking that the fall was all Eve's fault. Women were not smart and needed to be treated as "children". Men thought that women didn't know how to take care of themselves and needed a man to help them. As 'property' women couldn't own property. When they were married, any property they did have went with their husbands. In the 1600s and 1700s men were the legal individual and therefore if there was some disagreement in the family and the wife wanted to separate (divorce was forbidden), the husband was awarded the children. Later, when women were seen as the pious sex, courts would rule in favor of the mother having custody (but this was much later). As time went on women found that they enjoyed being single for as long as possible because they had property and had a say in the community.

Sexually, women were just there to produce children and please their husband. Child rearing was something scary for women in history. 1 of every 10 births would result in the death of the mother. Wow!

I have learned many other things that has caused me to realize how blessed I am to be here, now.

After thinking about all these things, I have realized how blessed I am to be living in this time and this place. I am an American. I am free. I am equal to those men in my society. I have a right to speak my mind. I have a right to own property. I have a right to life, liberty and my pursuit of happiness. I hope I can use this power to weld good things in this world.

Best Salsa EVER!

For those of you who attended the apt 204 dance party on February 20 this is what I made:

1 can corn, drained
1 can black beans (or you could use black-eyed peas or another type of bean that you choose)
3-4 medium/large tomatoes, cut to be about the same size as the corn and beans
1 green pepper (cut to same size as corn and beans)
1 Avocado (cut to same size as corn and beans and everything else in this recipe)
1/2-1 cup Italian salad dressing (the Zesty/spicy kind works the best, but all of them are delicious)

You can also throw in:
1/4 of an onion (I prefer the red ones but you could leave the onions out completely if you don't want to have onion breath forever)
1/2 a bunch of cilantro--basically do this to taste. I like a lot of cilantro!
or anything else you can think of!

Stir and Enjoy! You will want to eat it the minute you are done and it is delicious that way too but it gets more delicious as you let it sit in the refrigerator.

Dear Spring,

I think I heard you today.
I woke up to the birds singing outside my window.

I think I saw you today.
The robins were flittering around as I walked home.
I also noticed the baby animals starting to frolic.

I think I caught a whiff of your scent today.
The smell of flowers, cows, clean air and freshness.

My dear friend - I've missed you!

I'm looking forward to bonfires.
S'mores, sweatshirts and smoke.
Fire, food and friends.
What more could you ask for?

I'm looking forward to camping.
Stars, silence, sleeping bags.
Fire, food and friends :)
Oh I love camping!

I'm looking forward to being outside, having my feet in the new grass, smelling flowers, and so much more!!

I just wanted to write to you and tell you I'm so glad you are back!!!

Love always,

Angela

PS please don't be teasing me!

I Got A Feelin'

Driving to Idaho there is such a overwhelming feeling of emotions that wash over me. Every marker brings such happiness. It is the feeling of going home. I love the openness. I love the farms. I love the cows. I love the clouds. I love the colors. I love the sunsets. I love the stars (oh how I love the stars). I love the people. I love the streets. I love the accents. I love the smells. I love hay. I love the trucks. I love the boats. I love the families. I love the hats. I love the license plates. I love the blue and orange. I love the community. I love the memories. I freakin' love it all! I don't know of anywhere else I can go where I hit this wall of happy indescribable emotions.

Cherish The Time You Have

On Friday of last week, I went on a date with a good friend. We went to the Salt Lake City Grizzlies Hockey game. Loved it! The hockey game was super fast and exciting. There was even a pretty intense fight on the ice.

The point of my post is as follows:

We went with his grandparents who were invited by Zion's Bank to attend (we got to sit in a box suite). It was great to feel important and special and to be rubbing shoulders with important people. However, the thing I loved the most was the time I got to spend with a friend's grandparents (the fact that they were grandparents rather than just important people). I miss having grandfathers alive. I miss the opportunities I would have had with them. I miss having them giving me advice. I loved having that for even just a moment.

Be Open to Change

Being apart of a military family has taught me to be open to change. I have learned that change can be good for us. New things help us learn and grow in ways we never would have before. I have also learned that it is important to be open to new ideas and new things. Not only is it good for you and helps make you well rounded, but it is an attractive quality. You may not like the new thing, but the fact that you were open to trying it is fantastic.

Because of these lessons I have learned I have found I have a difficult time with people who are very close-minded. If the world was more open to change, really listening to people and trying to understand each other, the world would be a better place.

Private

I have decided to go private. I am not super excited about this but I have had enough experiences with other blogs and strange people checking it out.

I'm open to anyone I know reading it. So don't be shy!

If you would like to continue to follow my blog - please email me your email address. My email is angelafleming87@gmail.com. You may also put it in comments.

If anyone has any reasons why I should NOT go private - I'd love to hear those ideas too.
